This family of butterflies is known as Gossamer-Winged because their wings, like silk fabric, generally appear delicate and shimmery. Their wings are covered both by pigmented scales and by light-refracting scales. This family makes up about 30% of all known butterfly species and is further divided into Blues, Coppers, Hairstreaks and Harvesters. These butterflies have a unique relationship with ants called myrmecophily and 75% of the species associate with ants.
